size / dimensions: 20 1/2 inches high
Authentic tribal wood carving of a mythical crocodile ancestor spirit made by the Iatmul people of the Middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. The figure is a fine example of the theme of transmutation of human into crocodile which originates from a myth attributing the creation of the Iatmul people to a giant crocodile.

The figure was made to be inhabited by the spirit of the crocodile, the tribal clan totem of the Iatmul. Carvings of tribal spirits such as this example are often used in ceremonies and rituals that mark important stages of life. As part of an initiation rite for boys of the crocodile spirit clan the young initiates would have patterns cut into their backs which produce raised scars representing crocodile skin.

Missing some of the curved spikes going up and down the back of the figure, but otherwise, in great condition. Date of this piece unknown but shows signs of age and wear.
Height of the figure: 20 1/2 inches.
Price: $240

Located in Modesto.
