Position Title: Special Uses Support

Position Summary: In partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute, the Deschutes National Forest seeks an intern to help address some of the high priority work in the Special Uses program that is needed to be responsive to the public and also protects the National Forest. The Crescent Ranger District has a large special uses program that encompasses permits for everything from powerlines to recreation residences, outfitter/guides, organization camps and recreation events to waterlines. The program supports access to the national forest for the recreating public and also serves as a vital support to the infrastructure that supports our communities including transmission lines for phone, internet, water, and power. This position contributes to the goals of a supporting the special uses program and permits may fall within one district or cross multiple districts or even forests.

This position will be stationed out of the Crescent Ranger District but will support and learn about special use administration at the forest-level and on the other ranger districts. Summer projects and assignments will be across the forest providing the candidate with an excellent variety of projects and experiences.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
1. Support the Deschutes N.F. Special Uses program
2. Assist District Special Use administrators in permitting new special uses and reissuing existing uses.
3. Meet with permit holders and perspective permit holders.
4. Communicate with internal and external partners including district specialists and resource managers.
5. Maintain accurate files and database.
6. Learn about the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and assist the district in completing environmental analyses related to special uses.
7. Perform field inspections for permitted infrastructure and recreation events.
8. Use GPS units, camera, and other field recorders to maintain files.
9. Draft internal and external correspondence.
10. Complete a Community Action Project that is identified by the Intern, researched, and implemented during the term of service.
11. Attend and complete all MAI/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
12. Complete and submit all necessary MAI/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
13. Wear an MAI uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Position Requirements:
1. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation. Must comply with Driver Certification and Safety Agreement (see VetsWork Application Documents on website).
2. Attend a mandatory orientation in Corbett, OR from 2/5 to 2/9, quarterly Intern trainings in Trout Lake, WA (food and lodging provided for orientation and trainings), and quarterly Intern meetings.
3. Demonstrate independence, motivation and resourcefulness.
4. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
5. Ability to perform moderate field work in forest conditions, individually or part of a team.
6. Willingness to learn how to operate GPS and other data collection tools.
7. Communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with internal employees, partners, the general public, and stakeholders.
8. Meet other requirements of federal employee (eg. background check)
9. Must have served in US Armed Forces and have a DD214 with an honorable discharge.
10. 21 years of age at beginning of service term.
11. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
12. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
13. Ability to commit to the full 45-week term of service.
14. Selection, placement and retention are contingent upon passing the National Sex Offender Public Register and a national FBI fingerprint check. Position does not have recurring access to vulnerable populations.
15. Members are eligible to serve up to four terms of service and receive AmeriCorps Education awards for each term of service up to the value of two full time education awards only. It is the responsibility of the applicant to inform MAI of any previous service in an AmeriCorps program, regardless of whether or not they completed the previous term(s) of service. MAI is not liable for providing an Education Award to a member if they are not eligible under the Corporation for National and Community Service AmeriCorps guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Strong interpersonal skills.
2. Experience with GPS, GIS, map reading and navigations.
3. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
4. Enjoy working with a variety of people.
5. Ability to learn new skills in an accurate manner.
6. An interest in public lands special uses management policies and procedures.
