On to Porsche Racing
Context: Engineers were struggling to find a secure, quick-release solution for the engine cover on the Porsche 910.
The Solution: Over dinner, Ferdinand Piëch discussed the issue with a friend, Mr. Geze, whose company manufactured ski bindings, leading to the adoption of these clamps.
Era: The Porsche 910 was active in the mid-to-late 1960s (roughly 1966–1968).
Porsche engineers used front clamps from 1960s-era Geze wire ski bindings to securely hold down the engine cover on the Porsche 910 race car. Later the bindings were used on other Porsche models and other panels besides the engine covers
While the 356 model featured various leather straps and Tenax fasteners during the 1950s and 60s, the specific use of ski binding hardware as panel latches is famously associated with the 910 racing program.
At some point in the 60s Porsche engineers were raiding a lot of the European ski shops for any bindings with similar style clamps. making them hard to find
included in the photos is a photo showing the application of the clamps on a race car

what is unique about this set is combination of logos on the binding clamp
clamp shows made in Germany with a logo showing an alpine skier over ESS all in a circle

unsure as to what collaboration produced this set. was found in a plain box with no writing on it
"Look" on vintage bindings is not a German acronym, but rather the name of the renowned French brand Look Bindings, based in Nevers, France, and founded by Jean Beyl in 1947. They are famous for pioneering the "Pivot" turntable heel piece, which reduces pre-releases and protects the tibia, introduced in the 1960s
ESS: Manufactured in Germany in the 1950s.
These bindings were often used for touring or early downhill, allowing for the heel to be released for climbing or locked down for skiing. Vintage ESS ski bindings, particularly from the 1950s, are recognized as a staple of early alpine cable bindings, often featuring metal cable clamps that secured the boot heel to the ski. These bindings were commonly paired with leather boots on wooden skis during the 1950s and 60s
